Improving knowledge about specialty harnesses/vests
MACA's national survey found that specialty harnesses/vests are the most commonly prescribed accessory product, however there was a lack of research regarding their design, safety, performance, and use.
This world first, two-year research project, was undertaken for both Australia and New Zealand to address these knowledge gaps.
The report includes recommendations for the safe selection and use of specialty harnesses/vests aimed at prescribers, however these recommendations require the development of guidance materials. Further research is also recommended to investigate the selection and use of specialty harnesses/vests in supported school buses. MACA is seeking funding to progress these recommendations.

Activities
This project included three key activities:
- Survey: to provide a holistic understanding of specialty harness/vest use and access in Australia and New Zealand.
- Desktop review: to understand the vehicle types specialty harnesses/vests are used in; harness/vest products; compliance with vehicle standards, Australian/New Zealand standards, overseas standards, and road laws; as well as potential safety and usability issues.
- Expert recommendations: engagement of experts to review the range of specialty harnesses/vests and provide recommendations relating to safe use in motor vehicles.
